[Twitter Space] Nigeria 2023 Electricity Act: Benefits & Impacts on the Renewable Energy Sector

July 6, 2023

On June 9, 2023, the Nigeria Electricity Act was passed into law, repealing the Nigeria Power Sector Reform Act of 2005. This Act allows sub-national states and individuals to produce, generate, and distribute their own electricity.

The Act provides a framework to guide the post-privatization phase of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) and to encourage private sector investments in the power sector. It obligates electricity generation licensees to meet renewable generation requirements as determined by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
